Instagram Reel Dimensions and Aspect Ratio Guide (2026)
2026-10-07 · 6 min read
The correct Instagram reel dimensions are 1080 pixels wide by 1920 tall, a 9:16 vertical frame. Upload exactly that size and Instagram skips its own resizing, which is where most softness and cropping come from.
Instagram reel dimensions for crisp uploads
Reels fill the phone screen edge to edge, so every wrong pixel shows. Film or export at 1080 by 1920, thirty frames per second minimum. Anything smaller gets stretched, anything wider gets cropped, and both look worse than the original.
Length matters less than size, but keep clips tight anyway. Short loops hold attention, and attention is the whole game on the reels tab.
Safe zones: keep text centered
Interface chrome eats the edges. The profile row, caption, like buttons, and progress bar cover roughly the top 250 and bottom 250 pixels. Keep titles, subtitles, and logos inside the central band and they survive every screen.
Test on a real phone before posting, not just the desktop preview. I once centered captions perfectly in editing software and watched the like button sit directly on the punchline. The comments noticed before I did.
Photo and story sizes in one table
| Format | Pixels | Ratio |
|---|---|---|
| Reels | 1080 by 1920 | 9:16 |
| Stories | 1080 by 1920 | 9:16 |
| Portrait posts | 1080 by 1350 | 4:5 |
| Square posts | 1080 by 1080 | 1:1 |
| Carousel slides | 1080 by 1350 | 4:5 |
Export settings that avoid compression
Export H.264 at a high bitrate, ten megabits per second or more for 1080p. Low bitrate exports look fine on your laptop and fall apart on a phone screen, which is where everyone watches.
Turn on highest quality uploads in Instagram settings, post over Wi-Fi, and keep a local copy of every export. If a reel ever looks soft in the feed, compare it against the file you made. The reels downloader pulls the uploaded original, which settles the argument fast. For the official upload specs, see the Instagram help center.
